Salt Grass Trail Ride 2004

The Reese Lockett wagon #3  (Pride with Traditions)

Our wagon meets in Cat Springs, Texas and we ride a total of 92 miles into Houston to get ready for the Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo Parade.  Our day starts at 5:00AM when we get up to feed our horse, and get our rigs ready to move out at 6:00AM to our next camp site.  .  A hot cup of coffee is ready for us at the camp fire to help us get going.  After moving our rigs we are ferried back to the old camp site to eat breakfast, saddle our horse, and get ready to pull out at 9:00 AM for our day's ride.  Our day can be as short as 8 miles or as long at 25 miles depending on the route to our next camp site.  We ride in sun shine or rain, cold or heat, so you better not forget your jacket and/or rain slicker in your rig that morning.   (If you do it can be a very long wet or cold day in the saddle.)

Wagon #3 is the only wagon on the Salt Grass Trail Ride that cooks all its meals over an open camp fire.  Our breakfast will include eggs, bacon, grits, fresh fruits, orange juice, milk, toast, jelly, and coffee.  Lunch is eaten on the side of the road out of the back of the wagon.  We carry the makings for some great sandwiches, with fresh fruits, chips, cookies, soft drinks, or water.  Now when you get in from the trail in the evening, we have fresh pork chops, or port loins, chili, chicken, stew, or steaks with all the trimmings.

Here are some photos I took this year on the ride.  As you can see from the trail riders have a lot of fun on the trail, and when we get to camp that evening, the fun goes on.  There are dances almost every night if you have any energy to shake a leg, and you then go to bed to start the day all over.  This was Evelyn's and my twelfth SGT and it want be our last.
